An unpleasant symptom of seasonal colds is a cough. It can last a long time and bring a lot of trouble to the patient. An effective tool to combat this symptom is Ascoril. How the drug works, especially the use and dosage - in our article.

Release forms and composition

The pharmaceutical product, which is produced by the Indian company Glenmark, refers to medicines that have a complex effect, since it consists of three active ingredients at once:

  • salbutamol;
  • guaifenesin;
  • bromhexine hydrochloride.

These components are basic in tablet form of a medication. In the syrup for children "Ascoril" menthol is still present.

Tablets are white in color, with a separator in the middle. In addition to active substances, they contain preservatives, silicon dioxide, starch and talc. 10 pieces are sealed in blisters. The package contains one, two or five blisters.

Orange syrup for children has a viscous consistency, pleasant taste and aroma, thanks to sweeteners and flavorings. The composition also contains preservatives, water, glycerol and propylene glycol. The drug is available in plastic bottles - a dosage of 100 or 200 ml.

Pharmacological properties and indications for use

A feature of the drug is the powerful effect of all its components on sputum accumulated in the bronchi. An examiner (from the Latin expectorare - “drive away”) liquefies it and takes it out.

The bronchodilator salbutamol relieves spasm, relaxes the walls of the bronchi, increases the volume of the lungs, so the patient gets relief, can breathe more freely.

Guaifenesin makes sputum fluid, which contributes to rapid coughing.

Mucolytic bromhexine increases sputum volume, reduces the intensity of coughing, making it more productive.

Menthol, additionally present in syrup, relaxes the walls of the bronchi, soothes coughing attacks and relieves irritation, preventing the development of inflammation.

An oral drug has a high absorption rate through tissues into the bloodstream. Its bioavailability is 50 percent. It is excreted from the body by the kidneys.

An examiner is used for dry cough that accompanies respiratory pathologies.

List of indications:

  • bronchitis with obstruction;
  • whooping cough with cramping;
  • tracheitis, tracheobronchitis;
  • bronchial asthma;
  • pneumonia of undetected genesis;
  • pulmonary emphysema;
  • tuberculosis;
  • endocrine cystic fibrosis;
  • pulmonary pneumoconiosis.

Not every cold and acute respiratory infections can take a medication. Only if sputum stagnates and does not come out, as well as with obstruction in the bronchi.

At what age can children be given

The minimum age of patients who are allowed to take the drug is 12 months. Kids need to be given a syrup, it is easy to dose and take, it is better absorbed by the children's body.

Pediatricians prescribe tablets to older patients - from 6 years. At a young age, it is difficult to accurately dose the pills, and an exaggeration of the amount of active substances threatens with serious complications for the child.

What cough to take, with dry or wet

The action of active substances is aimed at increasing mucus by liquefying it. Therefore, the pharmaceutical product is suitable for the treatment of dry cough, as well as in cases where it is wet, but sputum is poorly excreted.

If you take the drug when there is enough mucus, it can cause stagnation of sputum and problems with patency of the bronchi, worsen the condition of the patient.

Some doctors prescribe the drug in a short course with a wet cough, when there is a severe spasm. With the help of salbutamol, it is removed, relieving the condition. But it is necessary to carefully monitor the well-being of the patient.

Instructions for use Ascoril for adults and children

The medication is taken orally. It is better not to chew the tablets, but to swallow whole, washed down with clean plain water. Compotes and alkaline drinks will not work, they reduce the effect of medicines. The syrup must be accurately dosed, it is not necessary to drink it, but it is desirable.

You can take the medicine before or after meals, food does not affect the effect and effectiveness of Ascoril. But intake at the same time as food slows down the process of absorption of active substances, that is, the speed of action slows down.

The daily dosage is selected individually and is divided into 2-3 doses. The course of treatment depends on the clinical picture and the severity of symptoms. Usually it does not exceed one week. The maximum allowable duration of therapy with pills or syrup is 14 days.

Ascoril Pills

Standard dosage:

  • children from 6 years - ½ pill twice a day;
  • adults - 1 tablet 2-3 times a day.

Patients under 6 years old are recommended to give a liquid version of the examiner.

Cough syrup

Pediatricians usually prescribe:

  • babies from one to 6 years old - 3-5 ml three times a day;
  • children 6-11 years old - 6-8 ml 3 times a day;
  • adolescents from 12 years old - 10 ml 2-3 times a day.

The maximum daily dosage of liquid syrup for adult patients is 40 ml.

During pregnancy and lactation

The active components of the drug easily penetrate into all tissues, including through the placental barrier. Therefore, pregnant women are forbidden to drink syrup or take pills throughout the entire period of bearing a child. This is fraught with various complications in the course of the gestation period, pathologies in the development of the fetus.

The examiner passes into breast milk in a large volume.Therefore, if nursing mothers need to use Ascoril, lactation should be abolished.

Breast feeding can be resumed no earlier than two days after the end of the course of treatment.

Drug interaction

If you take the drug with medications containing theophylline, salbutamol, or beta-adrenergic agonists, there is an excess of salbutamol, which threatens with serious adverse reactions.

Beta-blockers, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and antidepressants, taken with a medication reduce the effectiveness of the latter.

Diuretics and steroid hormones, together with the examiner, increase potassium deficiency, which causes pathologies in the work of the heart.

Antitussive drugs with codeine, butamate, oxeladine or ethylmorphine block mucus expectoration, worsening the patient's well-being and causing complications.

Taking pills or syrup along with antibiotics increases the effectiveness of the latter.

Contraindications, side effects and overdose

To effectively use the drug, the doctor must take into account the individual characteristics of the patient and the presence of other diseases.

The drug is strictly prohibited for use:

  • people who are allergic to any of the components (primary or secondary);

Which is better, syrup or tablets of Ascoril

The choice in favor of one form or another of the drug is carried out individually. The effectiveness of the tablets and syrup is almost identical.

A syrup is more suitable for treating children, because it:

  • safe for babies from 1 year;
  • It tastes good
  • better dosed, which reduces the risk of overdose;
  • has menthol in it, which increases the effectiveness of the drug.

For adult patients, it is more convenient to drink pills that you can carry and take when necessary. But syrup is also suitable for use at this age.

Proper dosage, compliance with the instructions and recommendations of the doctor will quickly eliminate a dry cough, remove sputum from the bronchi and improve overall health.
