Preparations based on extracts from plants are considered safe and effective. KRKA Herbion syrups are often used in the complex treatment of colds accompanied by cough. What kind of medicine should be taken, how to dose it correctly, and whether such treatment can be prescribed to everyone - the answers in our article.

Composition, release form and packaging

Among the herbal remedies presented by the pharmaceutical company, there are products designed to eliminate wet cough.

It:

  • syrup with primrose, which also contains thyme and menthol;
  • sweet suspension with ivy extract.

Medicines reduce the rate of inflammatory processes in the respiratory tract, stimulate liquefaction of sputum and its withdrawal from the bronchi.

And for the treatment of unproductive cough, "Herbion" with plantain and mallow is suitable. The drug helps to increase secretion and its subsequent withdrawal from the respiratory tract. It additionally contains ascorbic acid, which improves the regeneration of mucous membranes damaged by coughing attacks, and has a general strengthening effect.

In addition to the active ingredients, water, sucrose and the stabilizer methyl parahydroxybenzoate are present in syrups.

Medication is a brown liquid spilled in 150 ml glass vials. The pharmacy is sold in a cardboard box with an insert and a dispenser.

Pharmacological action, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Plant components have a complex effect:

  • reduce the viscosity of mucus;
  • improve sputum outflow;
  • contribute to expectoration;
  • inhibit inflammatory processes;
  • fight pathogenic microbes.

In addition, plantain extract, gently enveloping the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, eliminates the causes of spasms that cause a dry cough. Ascorbic acid increases the body's resistance, stimulates cell regeneration. Menthol in the composition of primrose syrup produces an analgesic effect.

Studies of the complex pharmacokinetics of syrups have not been conducted. You can judge only about the features of individual components.

Plantain and mallow polysaccharides are not adsorbed, do not decompose, they directly affect the membranes of the upper respiratory tract, forming a protective layer.

Ascorbic acid is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream in the digestive system and spreads to all tissues. About 40% of unchanged acid and in the form of metabolites is excreted by the kidneys.

Primrose saponins are adsorbed in small amounts. Mostly local action occurs in the respiratory system.

Thyme essential oil is rapidly absorbed and reaches a maximum plasma concentration, 2 hours after administration. Thymol is excreted by the lungs and kidneys.

Why prescribe Herbion syrups with primrose and plantain

Features of the complex composition of a herbal preparation based on plantain extract can improve the patient's condition in the case of:

  • acute pathologies of the upper respiratory tract, accompanied by an unproductive cough;
  • chronic infectious inflammation;
  • laryngitis of professional etiology (for teachers, singers, announcers);
  • coughing smokers.

If coughing becomes more frequent after taking the syrup, this is a good sign, then sputum gradually goes out.

The remedy with primrose improves the condition for diseases that have a wet cough among the symptoms. The syrup is used as part of the complex treatment of a number of pathologies.

Among them:

  • ARVI;
  • bronchitis of various origins;
  • tracheitis, tracheobronchitis;
  • pneumonia;
  • laryngitis;
  • congestion in the lower respiratory tract.

It is important to start the treatment in time and choose an effective medication intended for a certain type of cough. The correct appointment will be made only by the doctor, based on the clinical picture.

Instructions for use for dry and wet cough

For effective treatment and quick achievement of the desired result, it is necessary to strictly follow the rules specified in the instructions for each herbal preparation. Deviations are possible only on the recommendation of the attending physician, who adjusts the dosage or duration of therapy, based on the individual characteristics of the patient and the clinical picture.

Herbion syrups can be prescribed for children over 2 years of age. After all, the product produces an insignificant systemic effect on the body, its local effect.

Standard dosage of a phytopreparation for dry cough:

  • 2-7 years - 5 ml (1 measured spoon) three times a day;
  • 7-14 years old - 6-10 ml 3 times a day;
  • from 15 years — 10 ml (2 measured spoons) 3-5 times a day.

Primrose syrup has its own dosage, depending on the age of the patients:

  • from 2 to 5 years - 2.5 ml (1/2 scoop) three times a day;
  • from 6 to 14 years - 5 ml (1 spoon) 3 times a day;
  • from 15 to 18 years - 10 ml (2 measured spoons) 3 - 4 doses per day;
  • over 18 years old - 15 ml (3 tablespoons) - 3-4 times a day.

It is necessary to take cough syrups after a meal, be sure to drink plenty of liquids - preferably with warm tea, water, and compote.

The duration of treatment is 14-21 days. A second course is possible only after consultation with a doctor.

During pregnancy and lactation

The instruction does not say anything specific regarding the use of Herbion syrups during pregnancy. The thing is that this issue has not been studied.

But doctors say that the herbal components of the drug penetrate the placenta to the fetus, and through breast milk to the baby. And this effect cannot be called safe.

Therefore, you should refrain from using syrups and, in case of illness, replace them with other medicines. Especially dangerous is the use of drugs in the first trimester of gestation.If a nursing mother is forced to be treated with medication, lactation should be temporarily stopped.

Interaction with other drugs

In the complex treatment of diseases accompanied by a cough, antiviral agents and drugs that increase immunity are often prescribed along with the discussed drugs. They complement and strengthen each other, helping to quickly get rid of the disease.

Cough syrup with primrose should not be drunk simultaneously with other medications that thin the sputum. An increase in the number of expectorant drugs will only worsen the situation, it can cause severe bouts of obstruction.

"Herbion" from a dry cough is forbidden to use in parallel with antitussive drugs, the action of which is aimed at suppressing the cough reflex. Such "therapy" will lead to stagnation of mucus in the bronchi and complications, such as pneumonia.

Syrup with plantain should also not be combined with preparations containing ascorbic acid in order to prevent an excess of vitamin C.

Contraindications, side effects, overdose

The most important rule that should not be neglected is that you cannot take a damp cure for an unproductive cough, and vice versa, use a primrose-based preparation to treat dry cough. This is fraught with dangerous complications of the disease.

In addition, it is strictly forbidden to use both syrups:

  • people who are allergic to any of the components (primary and secondary);
  • children under 2 years old;
  • patients with diabetes mellitus (due to the large amount of sucrose in the syrups);
  • people with genetic fructose intolerance, with malabsorption syndrome.

During gestation and lactation, it is also undesirable to use vegetable syrups in therapy. Their effect on the development of the child has not been studied, so the possibility of such treatment should be discussed with the doctor.

Contraindications to the use of syrup based on primrose are also:

  • the period after acute obstructive laryngitis in children;
  • chronic obstructive bronchitis;
  • bronchial asthma;
  • lactose deficiency.

In the following diseases, the use of herbal cough syrups is not recommended.

It:

  • whooping cough;
  • gastric ulcer in the acute stage;
  • liver dysfunction.

Is it worth it or not in these cases to carry out treatment using the Herbion - the doctor decides, weighing the possible risks and benefits.

Side effects in syrups are similar. They are associated with a possible allergy to plant components, which manifests itself:

  • itching
  • rash;
  • swelling of the tissues;
  • nausea
  • indigestion;
  • gagging;
  • epigastric pain.

When the dose is exceeded, an increase in adverse events is observed. It is necessary to stop taking medications and consult a specialist.

Analogues of the drug

In the line of the brand under consideration there is another medication - "Herbion Ginseng." But capsules with herbal ingredients are not cough medicines. They have completely different indications associated with a weakened state of the body during increased physical, mental or emotional stress.

There are no complete synonyms for the drugs under discussion. But pharmacology offers an extensive list of medicines that can eliminate different types of cough.

  • "Mukaltin" in tablets;
  • "Bronchicum" in syrup, elixir, lozenges;
