Potato pancakes are known to all. But not many people know that the original Russian pancakes in other cuisines are no less popular, they just have other names - Ukrainian potato pancakes, American hash brown, Czech bramboracks ... The list can be continued for a very long time, but today, under our sights, the classic hash brown recipe and its variations.

What is a hash brown

Hash Brown (hash browns) is a dish of American cuisine, the technology of preparation of which is akin to the well-known to all potato pancakes. For breakfast, residents of North America and foggy Albion rub potatoes and fry it in the form of fritters or cutlets. At the request of the hostess, they add onion chopped into gruel. The dish is so popular that it can be ordered in a cafe, including fast food chains, or purchased in a frozen, chilled and even degenerated form.

Classic Potato Hash Brown Recipe

If you cook potato hash brown on your own, it may still be possible to understand the difference between the American dish and our favorite pancakes. Let's try!

Ingredients for the preparation of "overseas delicacy":

  • ½ kg of potatoes;
  • 50 ml of olive oil;
  • pepper and salt.

Cooking method:

  1. Potato tubers are washed, peeled and rubbed on a fine grater.
  2. The potato mass is reclined in a colander so that the glass is excess liquid (if possible it is still wrung out by hand).
  3. In a medium heat, a frying pan with oil is heated, in which potato patties are laid out with a spoon. Billets are salted and peppered.
  4. The hash brown is fried until browned on both sides.

Serving such an appetizer to the table can be done with or without sauces, depending on taste preferences.

Cooking like in McDonald's

To date, the general public does not know for certain what is part of a hash brown, which is served in a well-known chain of fast food restaurants. However, there is an adapted recipe, as a result of which it is possible to achieve great similarity between homemade potato pancakes and those purchased in similar cafes.

It will be required:

  • ½ kg of potatoes;
  • bulb;
  • egg;
  • 20 g of flour;
  • salt;
  • breadcrumbs;
  • cooking oil.

To prepare a hash brown, as in McDonalds, we follow a simple algorithm:

  1. The peeled potatoes are rubbed and boiled for 3 minutes, after which they are discarded in a colander and distributed on a paper towel to remove excess liquid.
  2. The onion is rubbed and sent to the potato mass, where egg white, salt and flour are also added.
  3. Cutlets are formed from the kneading dough, which are very well crumbled in breading.
  4. Deep-fried hash brown for 6 minutes on each side.

Important! If you abandon the breading, then similarities with products from McDonald's can not be achieved.

With egg and bacon

Hash Brown with egg and bacon is an English style breakfast option.

To feel yourself in a cozy cafe in the foggy capital of Great Britain with a cup of morning coffee, it’s enough to prepare a fragrant dish from:

  • 600 g of potatoes;
  • 200 g of onions;
  • 4 eggs;
  • 100 g of bacon;
  • 15 g cane sugar;
  • piles of vegetable oil;
  • salt, spices to taste.

Sequencing:

  1. The peeled potato tubers and onions are rubbed on a coarse grater, salted, seasoned and mixed with half the oil, after which the mass is squeezed.
  2. The onion-potato mixture is laid out on a hot pan with the remaining oil, leveled and fried on both sides for 3 minutes.
  3. Eggs are driven in from above, and then the container goes to a hot oven (250 ° C) for 10 minutes.
  4. At this time, bacon is cooked in the microwave oven, previously laid out on a plate and covered with a paper towel. This process will not take more than 3 minutes.
  5. In the final, bacon is laid out on eggs, sprinkled with sugar.

Before serving, the dish is covered for 2 minutes, which allows the sugar crystals to melt.

Hash Brown, as in KFC

Another variation of the recipe for cooking American dishes from very simple products:

  • 8 potatoes;
  • 50 g butter;
  • a pinch of salt and ground pepper.

Step-by-step instructions for creating overseas dishes:

  1. A large pot of water is placed on the stove, where pre-peeled potatoes are placed.
  2. The tubers are boiled for about 30 minutes until soft (but they should not fall apart).
  3. Water is drained, the potatoes are cooled and sent to the cold overnight.
  4. In the morning, the tubers are rubbed, mixed with salt, pepper and formed in the form of cutlets, which are fried until golden brown on 2 sides.

On a note! You can use raw grated potatoes. But here one point is important, taking this into account allows you to achieve crispness of the finished dish: the potato mass is well wrung out and dried with paper towels, which act as a degenerating agent.

With sweet bell pepper

To prepare a hash brown, which is reminiscent of potato pancakes to many, some experience and skill are needed. If the first attempt was unsuccessful, do not give up. Here is another recipe, the result of which can be very successful.

Components:

  • 3 large potato tubers;
  • ½ sweet bell pepper;
  • 20 g of flour;
  • 2 eggs;
  • salt pepper;
  • butter for frying.

The preparation method consists in the following actions:

  1. While water boils, the potato is peeled and rubbed.
  2. Vegetable mass is thrown into boiling water for 2 minutes, and then reclines in a colander.
  3. At this time, pepper is chopped into cubes.
  4. Potatoes are squeezed and mixed with salt, pepper and spices.
  5. In a separate bowl, eggs are beaten, into which the flour immediately intervenes.
  6. Balls are formed from minced potato, which are laid out in a pan with hot oil and poured with batter.
  7. After 6 minutes, the products are flipped to the other side.
  8. A hash brown is served with sour cream, spicy sauce or just with mayonnaise.

The main difficulty of American-style potato pancakes is in turning products during the frying process. They should not break up, which is not easy to implement, given the lack of eggs in the stuffing mass.
